Here's how to approach some of the most frequent area rug offenders:

2. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and two cups of warm water.
3. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and blot the stain, working from the outside in.

Red wine stains:

2. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or longer for tougher stains) to absorb the grease.
3. Vacuum up the powder.

Mud stains:

1. Allow the mud to dry completely. Do not try to clean wet mud, as it will spread.
